Powelton Village Asphalt Mural Project – West Philadelphia
Walls for Justice partnered with University City District (UCD) and the Powelton Village Civic Association (PVCA) to design and create a community-driven asphalt mural at a key intersection in West Philadelphia. This project is part of a broader initiative to improve pedestrian safety and enhance public space through creative placemaking.
The asphalt mural was designed to increase visibility for pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers while transforming the intersection into a welcoming and vibrant community space. By combining art with urban safety strategies, the project helps reduce the risk of accidents in a high-injury traffic area.
Community participation was central to the project. Residents and neighbors were invited to share input and vote on mural designs created by Walls for Justice, ensuring the final artwork reflects the identity and values of Powelton Village.
Inspired by the neighborhood’s gardens and pollinator-friendly spaces, the mural features a nature-based theme with floral patterns and pollinators in a calm, muted color palette. The design celebrates the natural character of the neighborhood while contributing to a safer and more beautiful streetscape.
This mural was painted directly onto the asphalt surface and serves as both a functional safety feature and a public artwork created with and for the community.
